Bruce R. Stam is best known for his landscapes of the Western United States, in which the effects of light are featured. The work is primarily in oils and based on many field studies, or plein air studies that he completes as he travels throughout the West. Historically, artists have depicted the western landscape to bring its beauty into homes and museums.
A painterly approach is used featuring bold brush strokes, which allows the viewer to make many interpretations of their own. Bruce has studied with William Scott Jennings, Matt Smith, Keith Bond and Kate Starling.
Colorful interplays of light and shadow are explored in each piece. Paint colors are often mixed on the canvas to enhance the glow of western light.
